“His ballsy voice sounds like Freddy Fender in a bad mood.”-James Porter, Blues Revue

“If Guitarlos’ life hadn’t been lived, Charles Bukoswki would have invented it.”-Tony Peyser, Santa Monica Mirror

Winner of the LA Weekly Music Award for Best Contemporary Blues/R&B Artist, 2005

Following a successful run through the L.A. music scene in the 80's, which was highlighted by recording gigs with Tom Waits, The Breeders and Dave Alvin, an invite to appear on The David Letterman Show, and a stint as lead guitarist/songwriter for the notoriously raucous Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs (immortalized in the Van Halen song of the same name), Carlos endured a lengthy absence from the music scene. Throughout the 90's and into the new millennium, Carlos could be found paying his dues on the streets of San Francisco, where he has become a street-corner legend, playing guitar to earn his keep. As a result of his hard living, Carlos landed in a San Francisco hospital fighting for his life with congestive heart failure, hence his second critically acclaimer cd, Straight from the Heart (the title track was written from his hospital bed). That experience, combined with the alcohol-related death of his friend and former band-mate, Top Jimmy, proved to be the catalyst of his recent personal turnaround and career resurgence.

Carlos Guitarlos is the real deal; Dave Alvin calls him a "genius" and blues legend Willie Dixon mentioned him by name in his autobiography.
